I had my first Hail and Farewell event this week...and I was hailed as one of the new officers at the command. Basically, this is a Naval tradition. Whenever there are new people coming, you hail them and whenever there are people leaving the command for deployment, change of duty station, or separating from the Navy...you bid them farewell. It is kind of a neat tradition...and we got free food too so that was nice. There were a number of us nurse residents/grads (as they call us). It was hilarious because when I was called up and the Commander told everyone that I was hoping to go into maternal-child nursing, there were cheers from that department (they are really understaffed). I talked to the department head for labor and delivery and she said that depending on how well I do on postpartum, I could be on labor and delivery 6-8 months after starting on my unit. Pretty cool I think!
