This past weekend was so much fun! A group of us from November Company rented bikes on base and biked through Newport! It felt so good to be on bikes. I felt kind of normal. It is such a beautiful place and seeing it the way we did was just perfect. I think I could live here! I enjoyed the company of my shipmates, the fun pictures, climbing all over the rocks, stopping for lunch on the beach, seeing the beautiful mansions, and sharing some laughs too. The only down part to the whole day is that those bike seats were not cushioned at all...and I'll leave it at that ;-). I think we cycled around the city and outskirts for about five to six hours...stopping every so often to explore or take pictures. I couldn't have asked for a better Saturday!
Saturday was awesome for another reason too...I got to sleep in! I think I slept between 12-13 hours! The funny thing is that I'm still exhausted...having a hard time staying awake during the day. I look forward to a normal sleep pattern again.
After arriving back on base, we rented kayaks. We rowed around the little island--going under several bridges. The funniest part of the whole thing was getting under the last bridge. It was high tide, so it looked like it would be a bit tight...I just didn't know just how tight it would be! I was sitting behind Kristine (my roommate) in the kayak and her plan was to speed up as fast as possible and then lie down and coast under the bridge. I agreed and we sped up and then leaned back...I NEARLY hit my head on the bottom of the cement bridge. I think I had about a two-inch margin! As we were rapidly approaching, I was thinking..."Oh dear...this may hurt!" Thankfully, I didn't hit the bridge, but once we got under, I had to use my hands on the bridge bottom to push us out of there. We were laughing the whole time because it was just so ridiculous! The other groups were funny too since one of the kayaking groups had a hard time making it under any of the bridges and got stuck at two of them...so we just sat and waiting and laughed! That was the best part of the kayaking trip.
By the end of the day, I think we had worked out nearly every muscle in our bodies. We dragged ourselves back to the house where I slept quite soundly for the rest of the night! :-) It was a good day!
