That's what happened to my car about three weeks ago as I was driving to Jacksonville, NC. Apparently, I overestimated my ability to drive in the snow. Honestly, I had been doing fine...had been driving for two hours and doing quite well. I was so excited to get away for a few days. It had been a crazy few days. My shift the night before was pure insanity...the kind where you have no extra time at all...not even time to take a lunch. I had just finished my shift, had breakfast, was listening to a new Josh Turner album, when I hit the patch of ice. I didn't even see it. I was on a straight strech of road and it looked like it had looked for the last 100 miles...nothing. I hit the ice, tried to break, and couldn't stop. The next few moments kid of played out in slow motion. I skidded off the highway into a ditch, but because it had snowed, I started spinning. I spun right through a telephone pole (cut it clean in half), and continued spinning for another 15-20 yards. I think I was so shocked, it took me a moment to realize that yes...that did just happen. I opened my car door and found myself in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by snow and it was bitterly cold. I grabbed my phone and started making calls...and couldn't for the life of me think of what to do next. My brother gave me some good advice, would tell me what steps I needed to take and then have me call back. That was very helpful! This nice lady stopped and called emergency services for me, gave me a coat since I hardly had any winter wear on (wasn't planning on getting out of the car), and let me sit in her warm car. That was so sweet of her...I was freezing. Pretty soon, there were a whole lot of people...from where they came...I have no idea. They were so kind and helpful. One of the responders let me sit in his warm truck while the rest of them tried to get my totally-destroyed car out of the snow. It took a while. One thing that I found irksome...and then rather funny...was to get a ticket! To add insult to injury...it's not as though my day wasn't already completely awful! The ticket was for willfully and unlawfully failing to stay within my lane when the lanes were clearly marked. That has got to be a joke! Well...if nothing else...it did provide me with some amount of amusement even while my car was still stuck.
Anyway, they ended up towing my car and taking me back to this little auto center in Williamson, NC...tiny place. I set about making all my calls and texting people. My Bible study leader and his wife came to pick me up...which was so kind of them because it was two hours away! Even in the midst of everything...I find myself extremely blessed...with good friends, kind people to help me with my car, good insurance, the fact that no one else was involved in the wreck, the fact that I walked away just fine...and that it wasn't worse.
My car is totaled of course...as you can see by the pictures. It is so sad too...since I loved my car! It was so great...I hadn't even washed it yet! Anyway...my immediate plan is to get everything sorted out with the insurance company and then go car shopping next week. Pray that I get one as good as my last. I'll post pictures soon!
