It's what everyone more or less dreads...being floated to another unit in the
hospital to work a shift because that other unit is short-staffed. Well...I
arrived at work, got changed into my scrubs, before I learned that I would be
floating to the General-Specialty Surgery unit. Bummer. At first, I felt so
overwhelmed because another unit means that I have no idea where anything is,
what their normal rountine is, wouldn't have access to the pyxis (medication
dispensing system) at first, and would have to do some scrambling to figure out
what was going on. Turns out that all my worrying was for nothing since the
shift went fine...and was perhaps the most boring shift I have yet spent in the
hospital. Usually, on slower days, I can at least entertain myself with doing
research online or working on blog posts, or anything really. Not
tonight...because there was a network downtime, which meant the computer
charting systems and internet were down for hours! That didn't make my night
very fun, but I suppose that an uneventful night is best overall.
Although...the problem with slower nights is that they tend to drag on. I
nearly fell asleep...if there are things happening...I can stay awake no
problem. Oh well...just wait and see...my floor will probably be slammed
tomorrow night after I told you all about how bored I was tonight. Bring it on
;-)
